Concrete Mix Design Excel sheet as per India Standard
Concrete is the backbone of modern infrastructure, and its strength begins with a well-designed mix. In this post, I’m sharing a detailed concrete mix design for M40 grade, developed in accordance with IS 10262:2019 and IS 456:2000 standards. This design ensures durability, workability, and structural integrity—tailored for moderate exposure conditions and manual placement.

📐 A. Stipulations for Proportioning
Before diving into the numbers, it’s essential to define the design parameters:
- Grade Designation: M40 (Target strength: 40 N/mm²)
- Type of Cement: OPC 43
- Maximum Aggregate Size: 25 mm
- Minimum Cement Content: 360 kg/m³
- Maximum Water-Cement Ratio: 0.50
- Required Workability (Slump): 110 mm
- Exposure Condition: Moderate
- Placement Method: Manual
- Site Control: Good
- Aggregate Type: Crushed Angular
- Admixture Used: Superplasticizer
- Maximum Cement Content: 450 kg/m³
These stipulations form the foundation for a durable and workable mix.
🧪 I. Mix Proportions for Trial No. 1 (SSD Basis)
The first trial mix was designed with the following quantities per cubic meter:
Component | Quantity (kg/m³) |
|---|---|
Cement | 400.00 |
Water | 167.40 |
Fine Aggregate | 688.29 |
Coarse Aggregate | 1211.76 |
Admixture | 4.00 |
- Water-Cement Ratio: 0.42
- Mix Ratio (Cement:FA:CA): 1 : 1.72 : 3.03
This mix achieves the desired strength while maintaining workability and minimizing water content.
🌧️ J. Adjustments for Field Conditions (Moisture)
Moisture content in aggregates can significantly affect the mix. For this trial:
- Free Moisture in Fine Aggregate: 0.00%
- Free Moisture in Coarse Aggregate: 0.00%
Since no surface moisture was present, the SSD values were used directly for batching:
Component | Adjusted Mass (kg/m³) |
|---|---|
Fine Aggregate | 688.29 |
Coarse Aggregate | 1211.76 |
Water | 167.40 |
🧮 K. Batch Quantities (Per 50kg Cement Bag)
To simplify site execution, the mix was scaled per 50kg cement bag:
Component | Quantity (kg) |
|---|---|
Cement | 50.00 |
Fine Aggregate | 86.04 |
Coarse Aggregate | 151.47 |
Water | 20.93 |
Admixture | 0.50 |
This batching format ensures consistency and ease of use for field teams.
